DMI Gender Inequality of Risk and Cost of Inaction Review

Leisa Perch, Practice Manager of SAEDI Consulting made a presentation on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 to UN agencies, both in the Barbados office and based in Dominica and stakeholder partners including the Bureau of Gender Affairs in Dominica.

The presentation was a culmination of work and research done between April and August 2021, which engaged various agencies and 47 stakeholders through key informant interviews, group interviews and focus group discussions. The stakeholders were 12 men and 35 women from various sectors which included, persons with disabilities, farmers, youth, fisherfolk, the business sector and government representatives and agencies.

The focus was to present an overview of the methodology, summarize country context and risk profile, Assess Gender Inequality of Risk by hazards, via Policy Review and cost of inaction and present key conclusions and recommendations in the areas of Agriculture, Fisheries, Health, Social Protection, Employment and Resilient Infrastructure and Housing.

The work involved mapping coping mechanisms for key vulnerable groups and assessing their adaptive capacity. And in an effort to reduce the role that gender plays in exposing and keeping persons vulnerable to disaster risk.
